Beware Of The Risk Of The Use Of Warfarin

Warfarin is an anticoagulant drug that has an affect or also called blood thinners. The affect of the drug is needed to inhibit blood clotting that can lead to heart attack and stroke. 

However, the uses of these drugs need to be controlled, as it has sparked serious bleeding side affects. In addition, these drugs also have a reaction if using with certain types of food such as broccoli, spinach, cranberry juice, and alcohol. So users should beware of dosage and other foods being consumed. 

Recent studies experts in Canada show that the use of warfarin needs to be more wary of again. The reason, side affects of warfarin as serious bleeding turns out more experienced by the patient. In clinical trials conducted at random, as many as one to three percent of users suffered bleeding warfarin per year. 

Based on the results of research published in the journal of the Canadian Medical Association, about 125,000 users of warfarin, with an average age of 66 years, almost 4 percent of them experienced hemorrhage each year. Higher level of its complications in the first 30 days when

they start taking warfarin, which is about 12 percent. 

For 5 years, nearly 11,000 people who is about 9 percent of the Group's user , warfarin treatment in hospital due to bleeding and 15 of them died. 

Tara Gomes, researcher of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), Toronto, said the rate of bleeding was found in this study is lower than other observational research is not finished since this one. This may be due to the level of complications is highest at the beginning

of taking warfarin. 

However, he added: "the level of hemorrhage in our research is much higher about one to three percent than that reported in the randomized studies. This difference may be due to the participants of the research we have older age than random research. " 

Gomes also stressed the doctor and patient must be alert on the use of these drugs because of many new drugs that contain the same affect. 

Dr. Peter Coleman, Deputy Director of research of the Stroke Association said: "Warfarin is commonly used to treat patients with atrial fibrillation to reduce the risk of stroke. However, it is not suitable for all people and all types of treatment, because these drugs have serious side affects. " 

Although it has serious side affects, however, warfarin is the most effective type of drug in treating atrial fibrillation. The use of these drugs must go through intensive consultation with the doctor.
